Commonly known as the London Plane Tree, Platanus acerifolia is one of the most successful trees for growing in southern Australian cities. The bark is grey and mottled, similar to Spotted Gum. The arching habit of the branches forms a high and spreading crown, which is a stunning feature in large avenues, with bright green foliage and stunning autumn colour of dull-golden colours. Ideal for roadside plantings, parks and an excellent shade tree and is easily grown on most sites except those extremely compacted and waterlogged. Plant in areas of full sun with well drained soils. Once established, Platanus orientalis is is relatively low maintenance and significantly drought tolerant and can withstand urban environments and pollution.
